About This Place

Nestled in the heart of Astoria, Mombar is a rare gem offering an authentic taste of Egyptian cuisine that transports diners straight to the bustling streets of Cairo. This cozy restaurant presents a culinary journey grounded in traditional home-cooked recipes, each dish crafted with care and bursting with rich, aromatic flavors that speak volumes of Egypt’s diverse gastronomic heritage.

The menu at Mombar is a celebration of classic Egyptian dishes, with standout offerings that are irresistible both in aroma and presentation. The Lamb Shank with Spinach and Couscous is a masterclass in slow-cooked tenderness, where the succulent lamb melts into the fluffy, subtly spiced couscous, creating a harmonious blend that warms the soul. For those seeking a more adventurous bite, dishes like Lamb Brain in lemon or tomato sauce, and Beef Shank braised in tomato cowara sauce offer bold, authentic flavors that highlight the depth of Egyptian culinary traditions.

Vegetarian guests will find delight in options like the Egyptian Moussaka, softly sautéed eggplant and zucchini layered with fragrant Egyptian spices, or the vibrant CousCous with seasonal vegetables, both of which are hearty and richly satisfying. The appetizers deserve special mention, with delicacies such as Grilled Liver served with caramelized onions and Kofta meatballs cooked in a light tomato sauce offering a taste of genuine Egyptian street food flair.

The dining atmosphere at Mombar is anything but typical. The intimate space, adorned with eclectic decor and art that the owner himself curates, creates an inviting ambiance that feels like an extension of a warm Egyptian home. Guests often remark how the chef-owner’s personal involvement—from cooking to serving to engaging with patrons—adds a layer of authenticity and charm that few restaurants can match. It’s this hands-on approach that makes dining here a uniquely personal experience.

While Mombar’s pace reflects its attentive, single-handed service, patience is rewarded with generous portions and deeply flavorful dishes that leave a lasting impression. Regulars rave about the lamb dishes—especially the Lamb Tagine & Steak—calling them must-tries for anyone eager to explore traditional Egyptian flavors beyond the usual Mediterranean fare. The selection of drinks, including refreshing Mint Tea, tangy Hibiscus Tea, and robust Egyptian Tea, perfectly complement the meal, rounding out the experience with authentic touches.

Mombar stands out not just for its exceptional food but also for the heart and soul poured into every aspect of the dining experience. It’s a place where cultural heritage is lovingly preserved on every plate and shared generously with every guest. Whether you’re a seasoned connoisseur of Middle Eastern flavors or a curious foodie seeking something truly distinctive in Astoria, Mombar promises a memorable meal steeped in warmth, tradition, and genuine hospitality.

If you are looking for a delicious home cooked meal in an Egyptian house, this is the place. The price is also very good for NYC. The food didn't wow me but for the price, it was of great value!

Unique dining in Astoria. Solid Egyptian food prepared and served by one man so if you are pressed for time this is not your place. My dining partner really enjoyed theirmeal, I was a little underwhelmed but overall a nice dining experience in a funky dining room

What a special place worthy of being a landmark! Outside is an unsuspecting, eclectically looking store front and inside a menagerie of unique decorations. Ambiance aside, the chef/owner championed cooking, taking orders, educating guests on the different meals, clearing tables… doing it all. That was the most impressive display of multitasking. The food was remarkable and portions generous. Everything was a highlight and my party of 4 left enjoying the entire experience. Not just a meal, but a whole experience. Would 100% recommend - the port

I love this place! Every time I come here it’s a unique experience, and the food is extraordinary, the lamb is must try. Just a tip though: if you visit this amazing spot, you need to have a lot of patience. You might wait over an hour for your food because the owner does absolutely everything, cooking, serving, taking orders, cashing out, etc.! It’s part of the experience! So don’t be rude and wait for your food! Also, it’s cash only, buuut the upside is that it’s BYOB! (He just has soft drinks and water)

A one of a kind experience. The owner himself literally made the hummus, beef shank, and eggplant dish. He served us a home made Egyptian meal. He then gave us a tour of his restaurant and showed us his art. A chef, a craftsmen, an artist, a really great guy. you have to go.

Amazing place with delicious food, artsy decorations and friendly chef. The owner does everything and has very interesting stories to tell. Everything in the restaurant is either his art or his collection, including the chandelier and flooring! It’s like eating dinner in an art studio. We had lamb shank and branzino, the lamb just melted in my mouth. After our meal, he even gave each of us a small piece of mint chocolate as dessert. Overall unforgettable experience, definitely a special place to check out!

What an experience! There is one older gentleman doing all the cooking and serving etc. Just know that as a result, the experience is more akin to eating at a family member’s house rather than being served at a restaurant, which is really part of the charm. Service is slow. Bring a friend and expect to spend a couple of hours dining. The menu is not published. He told us verbally what he could make and we chose lamb shanks, hummus, and cauliflower with pomegranate sauce. And the food, all of it, was so shockingly good I could never give it enough due. The meat on the shanks fell off the bone and was served in a fantastic sauce with a tabouleh minty spinach type mixture. Paired with the hummus and fresh pita… just so great. The interior is kinda crazy too. Think a bazaar or a garage stacked with family heirlooms and strange clutter/objects. This place is so memorable and special… can’t wait to return.

Went here for the first time tonight. Didn’t know what to expect. I have to say I loved it. The owner does everything. It’s a one man show- so byob and relax . The food was delicious. Had branzini, lamb, beef, beans, cauliflower . Owner so friendly and the prices were reasonable.. We were there 2 and half hours and could have stayed longer but I had to drive home . It’s decorated so cute with art work that the owner did himself. I highly recommend if you like this type of vibe. Got there at 6 was empty. By 6:30 place was full. So go early.
